What is the difference between balayage and highlights?

The main difference between balayage and traditional highlights is maintenance and placement. Balayage is a hand-painted technique that creates soft dimension and brightness with a seamless, blended transition as the hair grows out. Traditional highlights are applied in foils closer to the scalp, providing maximum brightness and lightness, but typically result in a more noticeable regrowth line and require more frequent maintenance.
